Video 7: Earth's Variable Climate

Student viewers see how scientists track ancient temperature and humidity records from tree rings and fossils to understand climactic change, the "Greenhouse Effect," and Earth's past climactic conditions.

  •  "Detecting Past Climates" examines how researchers use tree rings and fossils, plus ice coring and other techniques, to recapture evidence of weather and climate from the past.

  •  "The Greenhouse Effect" relates how this phenomenon has, in the past, made our world habitable.
  •  "Human Induced Change" analyzes evidence for man-made changes in the climate using data on carbon dioxide, ozone, and other components of the atmosphere.
