Video 4: Winter Storms-White Hurricanes

Winter storms can pack as much punch as hurricanes, and NOAA calls them "silent killers." Student viewers discover how temperature and humidity determine whether snow, sleet, or freezing rain will fall and how snowstorms can affect daily life and the economy.

"Nature's Battle Fronts" examines the origin of the theory of weather fronts and how jet streams and different masses of air shape the weather found in different regions of the United States.

"Operation MOUNTAIN STORM" presents a case study of winter weather and the interplay of terrain and precipitation in the mountains of Utah.

Through the video and related activities your students will:

Recognize how temperature at different levels in the atmosphere results in snow, sleet, hail, and rain.

Identify the role of mountain ranges, plains, lakes, and other terrain in determining the severity of winter storms and other weather systems.

Simulate cloud formation and dew point, and compare results with real-world data.
