Video 5: Thunder and Lightning

Find out how static electricity is generated and discharged in towering cumulus clouds, and why we see lightning before we hear the thunder, and examine light, sound, and electrical charge.

  •  "Flash and Crash" compares how light and sound differ in character and velocity. Graphical illustrations show how positive and negative charges accumulate in different parts of storm clouds, then discharge to trees and other tall objects on the surface of Earth.

  •  "From Ben Franklin to STEPS" compares early and ill-advised techniques with current NOAA experiments using balloons, computers, and other high-tech tools.
  •  "Storm Safety" offers tips from NOAA researchers regarding how students can apply their new knowledge of what makes thunder and lightning to keep themselves and their families safe in severe weather.
