F r a n k H i l l Astronomer National Solar Observatory, Kitt Peak
Let's Get Personal
I live on the outskirts of Tucson, in the Sonoran desert with my wife Cheryl who is a
social worker and medical clinic manager. We met in Boulder, where we had our auras
balanced together. It was a New Age romance. We've been married since 1982: I got married
instead of attending my PhD graduation ceremony. Cheryl is also an accomplished conga
drummer. I love her a lot. We also have an elderly gray and white cat, named Bilbo
Baggins.
In my other life, I am a "gear head"-I really enjoy auto racing of all sorts. This
interest is the other gift that Mr. Friedman, my Junior High School science teacher,
gave me. I now drive an appropriately named sports car for a solar physicist, a
Mitsubishi Eclipse! It's very fast and painted black, so I guess you could say it's a
total Eclipse (that's astronomer humor). I also collect race car books and build race car
models. I love music, particularly rock and roll like Concrete Blonde, Stevie Nicks, the
Pretenders, Tragically Hip, Crystal Method, Garbage, Underworld, Soul Coughing, P.J.
Harvey, Patti Smith, and Sheryl Crow. I have read Tolkien's "Lord Of The Rings" some 25
times (can you say compulsive?)
All in all, I am extremely thankful that my life has turned out like it has so far. I
have been very fortunate to have been able to pursue and actually capture some part of my
childhood fascination with math and science. This is why I feel it is so important to
encourage students to follow their dreams: it can be done!
