INTERPLANETARY WEATHERCAST: VTR (to shoot 4/19/96)

Sequence presents the currently-known facts about both 
Pluto and Neptune, in the format of a "weathercast", as if 
wind-speed and precipitation were of the same vital 
interest to hypothetical inhabitants of Neptune and Pluto 
as they are to us on Earth. The images used will be some of 
those we return to explore much more fully, and more 
scientifically later in the telecast. 

(Depending on final arrangements with WRC, we'll need 
more or less "weather graphics" and other tv formatting 
materials, inc. stings.)

HELLO, THERE. WELCOME TO "TODAY ON NEPTUNE AND 
PLUTO".

WHAT KIND OF WEATHER YOU CAN EXPECT ON NEPTUNE 
DEPENDS ON WHERE YOU ARE. DEEP DOWN IN THE 
ATMOSPHERE, IT'LL BE "HOT AND HEAVY". TEMPERATURES 
SOAR TO THOUSANDS OF DEGREES AND PRESSURES WOULD 
BUST ANY BAROMETER.

HIGHER UP, TEMPERATURES COOL TO MORE LIKE WE'D FIND 
ON EARTH. THERE ARE PROBABLY PLACES WHERE IT'LL BE 
RAINING WATER, AMMONIA AND METHANE. IT'S THE 
METHANE WHICH ABSORBS RED LIGHT AND GIVES NEPTUNE 
ITS BEAUTIFUL BLUE COLOR...

STILL HIGHER, WHERE THE HUBBLE CAN SEE, EXPECT SOME 
CLEAR TO PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES. BUT DON'T WORRY ABOUT 
GETTING A SUNBURN.  OUT HERE, THE SUN'S INTENSITY IS 
ONLY 1 / 900TH OF WHAT IT IS ON EARTH.  

ELSEWHERE, SKIES ARE CLOUDY -- WITH HUGE CIRRUS 
CLOUDS THE SIZE OF ENTIRE EARTH CONTINENTS, MADE OF 
METHANE ICE CRYSTALS.  

UP HERE, THERE ARE ALSO PLACES WHERE JET STREAMS 
BLOW AT OVER 1200 MILES PER HOUR -- FAST ENOUGH TO 
PROPEL STORMS FROM CALIFORNIA TO NEW YORK IN LESS 
THAN 2 HOURS -- THE FASTEST WINDS RECORDED 
ANYWHERE IN THE SOLAR SYSTEM...

WE HAVE NO PREDICTIONS OF "GREAT DARK SPOTS" OR 
"SCOOTERS" TODAY... BUT WE'LL BE USING THE HUBBLE TO 
KEEP LOOKING IN THE COMING YEARS!

AS FOR PLUTO... LOOK FOR WIDESPREAD FROSTS OVER 
LARGE PARTS OF PLUTO TODAY, AS THE ATMOSPHERE 
CHILLS OUT AND DEPOSITS ITSELF ON THE GROUND! WATCH 
FOR INCREASING BRIGHT SPLOTCHES AS SEEN FROM EARTH 
IN THE COMING DECADES.

DRIVING ALL THIS WILL BE FALLING TEMPERATURES. THEY 
WON'T BE GOING DOWN MUCH IN THE NEXT HUNDRED YEARS, 
BUT ENOUGH TO CHANGE THE PLANET'S SURFACE. DAYTIME

UNDERSTANDING EARTH'S WEATHER MEANS USING ALL THE 
TOOLS OF MODERN METEOROLOGY -- INCLUDING 
SATELLITES LOOKING DOWN -- AND MAYBE WE'LL EVEN 
FIND MORE CLUES BY LOOKING FAR BEYOND EARTH, WITH 
THE HUBBLE TELESCOPE. 

OCEANS AND CONTINENTS HAVE A COMPLEX EFFECT ON

OTHER PLANETS LIKE JUPITER OR NEPTUNE, GAS GIANTS 
WITH NO OCEANS OR SOLID SURFACES TO CONFUSE 
MATTERS.
 
SPACE TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP US GET THE "BIG PICTURE" 
AS IN THESE SPACE SHUTTLE STUDIES OF LIGHTNING.

THE HUBBLE SPACE TELESCOPE FUNCTIONS AS AN 
INTERPLANETARY WEATHER SATELLITE WHEN IT LOOKS AT 
THE OTHER PLANETS IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD. IT HAS 
ALREADY SHOWN US LARGE-SCALE, LONG-TERM PHENOMENA 
THAT MAY ALSO ILLUMINATE EARTH'S CLIMATE.

16.	HEIDI'S NEPTUNE RESULTS: LIVE/STScI (05:30)
Presentation uses video stills playback, computer 
manipulation, and pre-planned interactions.
STScI kids (1 or 2) stand behind Heidi on stage...
Heidi, BG, Sasha, etc.
HEIDI ad lib presentation: discusses fact that Neptune 
looks pretty much the same in 1996 as it did in 1995: no 
huge Dark Spots apparent. This gives astronomers a 
baseline of what's "normal" on Neptune, and is therefore 
very important. What Voyager saw in 1989 and Hubble in 
1994 seems atypical. HEIDI will discuss how long-term 
observations from Earth's surface also provide valuable 
data, extending back before the "Hubble era" began with the 
refurbished telescope in 1993. Though of lower resolution, 
surface telescopes provide an accurate record of how 
Neptune's overall brightness waxed and waned. She will 
note that there appears -- though it's not proven -- to be 
an intriguing correlation with the 11-year solar cycle. 
She'll set the Neptune observations in context by noting 
that since Neptune's year (its revolution round the Sun) is 
just under 165 years, we've only been looking at it 
carefully for the equivalent of "six Earth weeks". She'll 
compare that to the one week of watching clouds some 
students have been engaged in as part of LHST (see 
sequence 30)

MARC BUIE... PEOPLE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO GO ONLINE AND 
READ A BLOW-BY-BLOW OF WHAT YOU'VE BEEN UP TO... WHAT 
HAVE YOU DISCOVERED?

MARC BUIE will report that the Pluto results still need 
further analysis. At first look, he can see EXACTLY what he 
had hoped for -- a large brightening of Pluto's surface. But 
he is worried that this may be an artifact of the telescope 
(inherent in its resolution and NOT a fault) and these 
particular observations, and so is working hard to make 
just what he wanted to see go away! He will explain why 
this is what good science is all about: being harder on your 
own data than anyone is likely to be, especially when you 
get what you wanted from an observation. On the other 
hand, he is very pleased to see great consistency in most 
places with the 1994 data that was part of the press 
conference which received international attention in early 
March. This means that the techniques he and his 
colleagues are using are really seeing the surface of Pluto. 
He'll talk about repeatability in science. And he will 
indicate that for all this self-scrutiny he thinks that he 
can perhaps see a small brightening of one section of the 
image which just might be the evidence of Pluto's 
atmosphere freezing out that he was looking for.

TIME AT NASA'S GODDARD SPACE FLIGHT CENTER ARE 
ALREADY HARD AT WORK PLANNING NEW "SERVICING

JUST AS IN 1993, ASTRONAUTS WILL TAKE OFF IN THE 
SHUTTLE TO GET THEIR "HANDS ON THE HUBBLE". THE 1997 
MISSION SHOULD BE LESS COMPLEX, BUT NASA HOPES NO 
LESS SUCCESSFUL. 

TRAINING HAS BEGUN: COMPUTER SIMULATIONS HELP PLAN 
THE TASKS. ASTRONAUTS WILL TIRELESSLY REHEARSE IN 
UNDERWATER TANKS, SIMULATING LOW GRAVITY. THEY'RE 
DUE TO INSTALL TWO NEW INSTRUMENTS TO IMPROVE 
HUBBLE'S EFFICIENCY, AND ALLOW IT TO EXAMINE OBJECTS 
NOW OBSCURED BY INTERSTELLAR DUST.

ANOTHER SERVICING MISSION, SLATED FOR 1999, SHOULD 
BRING AN "ADVANCED CAMERA", ADDING STILL MORE 
CAPABILITY.
