QUESTION: Are people working on a better telescope? ANSWER from Chris Burrows on May 11,1996: You asked if people are working on a better telescope. Definitely! The Hubble telescope is supposed to continue operating until 2005, and during that time we will continue to improve the instruments on it by Astronauts visiting it andreplacing the instruments. Next year, we will be putting a much better spectrograph (to measure the colors of light from stars) and an infrared camera. Infrared light is light that you can't normally see (heat rays!), but by taking pictures with a special detector we can make a picture that we can look at. After Hubble we hope to launch a much bigger infrared telescope. But that will probably take 15 years to build. Hope this answers your question!
