QUESTION: Have you ever seen something strange or an accident with the HST? ANSWER from Lynn Foster Baassford on May 28, 1996: We haven't had anything major fail yet which could impact HST's mission. As Flight Controllers, we see many alarms (high/low temperature/voltage conditions) every day. (Kind of like a red alert going off on the bridge of the Enterprise). We try to distinguish if the alarm is routine or a problem, make a quick analysis of what's wrong, and call in the appropriate specialist. Just like your parents' car, as HST grows older parts fail. Unlike their car, HST was built to last at least 15 years in Space by including many backup systems to use if one fails. Even the Starship Enterprise needs to be repaired occasionally at a space dock. Similarly, our repairs and equipment updates are done during a Servicing Mission by the Space Shuttle Astronauts. Our next one is scheduled for February of next year (1997).
