QUESTION: Do you think your job is boring, would you recommend it? ANSWER from Lynn Foster Baassford on May 28, 1996: First, just like any other career, not everyone would enjoy being a Flight Controller. There are both boring and exciting aspects of the job. For example, every episode of Star Trek focuses on an exciting & interesting mission for the Enterprise's bridge crew. What you don't see is what happens in-between those missions. The in-between times might be routine & boring to the bridge crew; however, it is necessary to maintain the crew's peak efficiency & knowledge just in case something happens. Same thing applies here to HST's 'bridge crews'. Secondly, the Flight Controller career is going to transition into a different career. NASA's current vision is to combine Flight Controllers (for all spacecrafts), Subsystem System Engineers (those specialists we call in) and computer automation into one type of job. So, by the time you graduate from college, a whole new career will exist. Truth be told, I like my job. I love the fact that my work has made a contribution towards all of HST's discoveries. Those discoveries have made small steps and giant leaps in the world of science. (Some subject matter includes: Brown Dwarfs, Black Holes, Birth of Stars, discovery of stars, and new calculation for age of the Universe).
